Games Workshop has released an Android app which has the Warhammer 40K 9th edition rules for free. iOS is coming soon, they say.
The app launch has not gone well. There have been nearly 2,500 reviews and most of them 1/5. At the time of writing, the app has an average review score of 1.2/5.
The problem? Slow, clunky and the app is just a gateway to a PDF stored on Google Drive. As a result, it’s not easy to search for the rules you need to lookup.
Games Workshop does have a cancel anytime, £3.99 per month premium subscription service which lets you add references to your rules and provides access to still-valid 8th edition rules. Later on, an army builder is coming to premium subscription too.
App launches are never easy and always dominated by reviews of the app when it is in its least evolved state. Games Workshop will surely update the code over time.
In the meantime, the core rules for the newly launched 9th edition of Warhammer 40K are available as a free download and in an impressive range of languages. Head over to Warhammer Community for your PDF download.
I’m not sure how useful it is, but to try and understand what most geeks were saying, I took 1084 reviews of any star ratings, stripped out some common stop words and built a wordcloud.
