As an ardent anime fan, I can admit that some shows, even popular ones, sometimes get important issues well and truly wrong. Race, women, age and consent can sometimes be troubling.
To their great credit, Crunchyroll isn’t shying away from this. The anime platform is running Virtual Crunchyroll Expo (V-CRX) this year from September 4th to the 6th, due to the lockdown. The free event has been special guests and programs at an impressive rate and will also host a panel discussion on race in anime.
Arthell Isom, the CEO of Tokyo-based D’ART Shtajio and the half-Japanese Tokyo-based journalist Roland Nozomu Kelts, will take part in that discussion. Both should be incredibly insightful.
Also announced this week for the virtual expo is that Yongje Park, creator of The God of High School will appear on a panel discussion too.
V-CRX will have the premiere of GIBIATE episode 9, and we’ll hear from Masahiko Komino, the director and character designer of the show (also the animator for “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure”.
Noblesse, an upcoming Crunchyroll Original series will get some attention and Kwangsu Lee, the artist for the animation, is another panel guest.
Studio MAPPA has a virtual art gallery that fans will get to look at as well as behind-the-scenes artwork from some of their popular series, including The God of the High School.
The delightful Kamui Cosplay and Rock M Sakura have been announced as the two remaining judges for the Cosplay Cup as well.
