Mage Hand Press has a flying Kickstarter success on their hands with the Dark Matter Starter Set. The current tally is; 30 days still to go and more than $135,000 pledged (against a $25,000 target).
So, what are Mage Hand Press doing? They’re posting teasers of quirky Dark Matter monsters, like the Cat Box.
For context, Dark Matter is D&D 5e in space, but it’s a sci-fi game that cites both Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Doom as inspirations. I feel that the Cat Box starts off on the Hitchhiker’s Guide side… and hopefully doesn’t go all Doom on unsuspecting characters.
The monster has evolved to look out for boxes labelled “kittens”, “cats inside” or something like, climb into and then wait in ambush. It might even let a feline-like tail sneak out.
When it attacks, surprising a curious cat-lover, the amorphous terror sprouts cat-like limbs and claws. Challenge: 2.
