I think Matt Smith is making a success of Doctor Who. The eleventh Doctor manages just to have that touch of … difference? alternative sanity? eccentricity? … that I kinda want from my Doctor.
I will admit that I was very worried before the series. In particular, from some of the scene photographs that became available before the series started to air on TV.
The most popular post on Geek Native, back in March 2010 when the site was quite new, was titled horrible pictures for any Doctor Who fan and showed Matt Smith, as the Doctor, half-dressed in a football strip and James Corden.
I really didn’t want the haven of Doctor Who invaded by the non-geek, badly behaved supporters, over-paid ball-kicking, world of football.
As it happens, tonight’s episode “The Lodger” almost goes head to head with England’s kick off game against the USA in the World Cup.
Here’s the trailer. There’s no trace of football in it but it does feature James Corden.
Back in 2007 Doctor Who Magazine ran a comic strip called “The Lodger” which featured the Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler and Mickey Smith. It seems likely that writer Gareth Roberts based tonight’s Doctor Who: The Lodger on it.
So, what do you think? Are you (were you?) worried about the Lodger before you watched the episode?
See it? What did you think?
(P.S. Look out for the ticket to the Van Gogh exhibition on the fridge – a link back to Vincent and the Doctor)
