Last week, Green Ronin launched their “new” fedual fantasy RPG Sword Chronicle.
Sword Chronicle is a fantasy RPG with lords and ladies, a hierarchy of nobles and adventure. There are two important things to know if you’re tempted by it.
Firstly, this is effectively a relaunch of the Chronicle System which was first used on the Game of Thrones RPG (which is now out of license). The rules have been updated, but you can now use Chronicle System supplements to expand your Game of Thrones roleplaying, and if you that that RPG, then you already have a huge chunk of Sword Chronicle rules.
Secondly, this is a COVID-19 required “agile release” which means Green Ronin used back-to-the-wall innovative techniques to get the book made. It’s a two-tone retro-print, rather than full colour, and it’s digital-first.
If I’ve bought the digital Sword Chronicle can I get a discount on the print?
Yes, but.
In a blog post Malcolm Sheppard says the game is selling well and that Green Ronin are getting lots of questions about whether a print on demand (POD) option is coming to DriveThruRPG.
The plan is to release Sword Chronicle as POD, but Green Ronin doesn’t know when it’ll happen. It doesn’t feel like the publisher needs much longer, though. They stay they need to see the proofs (early hard copies) of the books as they would be produced by the POD so they can make tweaks as required.
If you’ve already bought a PDF, then there’s good news. You can get a discount on the POD. However, Green Ronin need to email you the coupon code, and that means you need to give the company permission to email you.

Green Ronin swear this isn’t a marketing ploy and I believe them. So, if you’ve bought Sword Chronicle and are tempted by the POD then make sure your DriveThruRPG settings allow Green Ronin to email you.
Once the POD comes out then, future purchases won’t use this system as bundle prices will be built into the DriveThruRPG purchase options.
