The Rising of the Shield Hero was a hit for Crunchyroll last year. It’s one of those animes in which the hero from modern Japan wakes up in a fantasy universe.
In this story, he’s not alone. Three other people are with him, and they’re all heroes. The catch? He’s drawn the rubbish character. He’s the Shield Hero.
The anime then gets quite bleak. Oh, not a hardcore depression fest that some anime specialise in, but it sure skirts those depths. Then, towards the end of the season, there’s a dramatic high fantasy curveball thrown in.
I’m especially interested in season 2 as I’m not entirely sure where it could go.
It seems the rules got re-written at the end and while there was plenty of pointers at huge plot-arcs, it also felt as if the immediate issues with the Shield Hero finding his role in the world had been addressed. Will the show be the same without that strand?
There isn’t a launch date confirmed for The Rising of the Shield Hero season 2 but, at the time of writing, there are still a few hours in Virtual Crunchyroll Expo, and that’s generating plenty of news announcements, like the Loot Crate deal and Stone Wars.
