Thortful sells cards and other gifts, so the approach of Halloween and the shopping season means they’re doing stuff to grab our attention.
So, let’s see what they’ve come up with!
The retailer has been mining IMDB data of horror movies to find the most and least scary films of all time.
How? Well, they hit up the horror search results at IMDB and then applied this methodology;
Using IMdB data about the top horror films, we normalised votes, ratings and metascore individually from 0 to 1, then summed them up to give the final index

I’m surprised that The Shining does so well. I mean, it’s a great movie but it’s not as scary as… say, A Quest Place or The Exorcist (depending on when you watched the latter film).
The methodology may be the wrinkle here. IMDB rates movie but how good a movie it was, not by how scary it was. I totally accept that The Shining was a better movie than A Quiet Place.
The least scary films are probably a better fit for the methodology. If you watch a horror and it doesn’t scare you at all, and as no either attributes of note, you’ll rate it poorly. That said, I’m surprised to see Wolf rate so poorly.
