The first Poupelle of Chimney Town trailer was gorgeous but entirely in Japanese. We could see the iconic Chimney Town coming to life, but unless you speak Japanese or knew the book, that was all the teaser offered.
Fortunately, the extended trailer is subtitled and reveals snippets of the famous picture book.
Akihiro Nishino, a Japanese comedian, is bringing their book to life with an anime due out on Christmas day.
The story is set in a walled-off town. The towering structures that seal the people in are so tall that no one can see over and the billowing smoke from the thousands of chimneys forever obscure the sky.
Given all that pollution and unpleasantness, no wonder a deliveryman gives up trying to find a heart they were supposed to be couriering after accidentally dropping it.
The two lead voice actors are Masataka Kubota (Tokyo Ghoul live-action films) who plays the titular Poupelle and Mana Ashida (Pacific Rim) as the boy Lubicchi.
Kubota told press;
I had the opportunity to read the original picture book and was really moved by its exciting story and the warmth that reminded me of my heart that I had almost forgotten as an adult.
After receiving the offer for this voice acting role, I read the book and found the pictures were so cute and the story was wonderful. I was so happy to be playing the voice of Lubicchi!
