"Motifs of deceptive appearances, last-minute escapes, and the merits of inner worth are addressed with humor that is accessible to both reluctant and avid readers."―School Library Journal
Praise for How to Train Your Dragon:
IRA and CBC Children's Choices List 2005
"Short chapters, clever slapstick, kid-pleasing character names and goofy, childlike drawings will keep even reluctant readers turning these pages--and chuckling as they go."―Publishers Weekly
"A narrative rich in dragon muck... genuinely fierce [and] intelligent."―Kirkus
"...This is a goofy and exciting tale of an underdog who proves that brains can be just as important as brawn. Kids will hoot at the ridiculous names and sympathize with Hiccup's exasperation with his truly obstinate but strangely lovable dragon. A delightful read."―School Library Journal

- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2013So, is this as good as the first How to Train Your Dragon book? Well, yes and no. Yes because it gives us more in the background of Hiccup's life, and no because it's more childish. Now I will say that I am 16 so it's not exactly for my age group, but I have spoken to the author and she said that there are a ton of older readers. The books really didn't take off until the movie was released, at least in the United States. I have a feeling the newer books are a little more grown up, but I don't know cause I haven't got to them yet. Once I have I will add an update to this review below. I would say that if you don't mind a little bit of childish potty humor then you should be fine. A few times I was laughing, but only because of some other jokes. Like I said this book is not targeted at my age group, so I didn't suspect teen humor or regular jokes. It is very corky and a quick read. It is a very good kids book and your children will love it. You will love to read it to them because of how different it truly is. I will defiantly continue reading this series in anticipation for the second movie coming out June 13th 2014!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2011I hate to admit it, but I wasn't very good about reading to my son until we found this series. Every chapter is a cliff hanger and we are eager to get started the next evening. If my husband reads to him, I'll read it myself so I don't miss a chapter. The stories are funny and smart without being full of potty humor. It's nice to read about a decent normal kid who thinks his way out of his problems even if he doesn't get credit for it. Goodbye Captain Underpants!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2010The "How to Train Your Dragon" books are sublime silliness. After my grandson saw the "How to Train Your Dragon" movie I purchased the book for him and now he is into the second book of the series. He is 6 going on 7 and the fun of these books encourages his listening to stories but also his budding reading skills. Even though, as an Eng Lit major, I can't vouch for their classic worth, they are great fun and wonderful for a young reader's introduction to reading chapter books.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2014🐲Hello another wise moment with Freja. This book is recomened for readers 10+. This is book two of how to train your dragon. Hiccup just saved the tribe from a sea dragon. He is a bit more pouplar in his tribe but still weakling. Toothless is still a jerk but when a strange man comes. je brongs a map.💣

- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2006I read this book and "How to Train Your Dragon" to my fifth grade class. When I finished they begged me to go on Amazon and look up the next book - which we discovered will be published in May. I ordered it right then and they have circled the anticipated delivery date. The characters are amusing, the writing is fresh, the vocabulary (especially the character's names) is right up an adolescent's alley - and they loved having a grown up having to pronounce names like Snotlout and Baggybum. Practically every one of the kids (average to above average readers) have read both of the books on their own, also.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2020Bought this to read to my son. Shipped quickly and arrived in perfect condition. My son loves this book and we will be ordering more from this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2018My son loves these books. He loves the movies/tv shows, but he loves how these have some of the same characters, but they have a way bigger world. Many more characters, dragons, and storylines to learn about. They are chapter books, but are still easy enough to where he am read them in a couple days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect
I received this on time and in a good shape. Besides, the story is great for working on an introduction to literature for children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny thrilling and a good ending to a honest but poor farmer
Loved reading this book with my son. The fiendishly lucky plan devised by Hiccup on a very very very bad day would be a tale to remember. The ending where you find out that you needn’t be a hero to get a hero’s welcome couldn’t be done better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Espetacular!
Banguela me tirou muuuuiiitas risadas novamente. Adoro o Banguela do filme, simplesmente o amo!
