- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2013I loved this novel. I've heard terrible reviews and great reviews about it. I love that it was exciting even though it wad only just interviews during the aftermath.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2013While zombie tales may be frequent and familiar, Max Brooks has crafted a unique entry for this overcrowded genre. The storytelling is conducted in the style of a series of interviews with survivors who played various roles in now (in terms of the time-frame for the story) recent zombie near apocalypse. The tale is fashioned as a companion to a more formal, official UN report on the now ended global zombie incident and includes more personal commentary and insights from various participants around the world. As such, while the various players are many, there is almost no character development. Instead, each commentary provides a unique and different perspectives from the early warnings to the final, still in progress, mopping up activities. The reader is forced to stitch together a more comprehensive understanding of events.
What is particularly compelling is Brooks attention to cultural and ideological perspectives and allows biases to creep in that provide for a diverse and at times seemingly illogical reactions and responses. At the same time, he displays an experienced and nuanced understanding of the likely political and geopolitical responses and their ramifications. There are no individual heroes and the outcome is one more of sheer survival rather than conquest or victory.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good romp through a world of zombie carnage.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's written as a collection of interviews with key players from a fictional previous global zombie pandemic. The stories range from sources all over the planet so there should be something to wet the taste of any English reader. There are links between the accounts and lots of plot hooks left open, great food for thought for any budding zombie genre writers or story tellers. I especially liked what happens in Korea, but I'll let you read about that. The writing style is easy to read and contains small cultural references to give the 'foreign' interviews an authentic feel, although whether they are correct I could not say. As it is not a traditional, 'follow the protagonist', story the pace is not terribly fast, but this is made up for by the scope and depth of tales which give you good rounded vision of the war from initial infections to final resolution. I'm no expert on the zombie genre but this was an excellent horror apocalypse story and well worth a read by those who like to immerse themselves in that sort of world.

4.0 out of 5 stars An instant horror classic
Rather than one long story, `World War Z' is written as interviews, with stories based before, during and after the Zombie War. These accounts are given by the survivors, which include the Army, doctors, scientists, civilians and even from a guy in space.
Some of the stories are so creepy and realistic, you do start to believe that these tales are actually true.
The story is gory, gruesome and scary, as you'd expect from a zombie novel.
WWZ is great to read in bite-sized chunks (no pun intended!) and can be enjoyed more completely if you have read Max Brooks' first book "The Zombie Survival Guide" beforehand, as there are many references to it throughout.
After you've read it, expect to be questioned by other people who have read it who will ask you "which story is your favourite?" as there are so many good ones to choose from.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book was very hard to put down, not just the usual zombie gorefest but a careful well thought out story concentrating more on the political and sociological aspects of the outbreak rather than blood splatter, but it was still told at a personal level.
The scope for spin of novels from the battles and countries experiences surrounding the outbreak are endless and I really hope Brooks puts pen to paper and capitalises on how good this book is.
