Flash Gordon is one of the few comic strips from the first half of the twentieth century to retain any popular-culture currency, remaining synonymous with swashbuckling, space-exploring science fiction. For its first decade, it was arguably the best-looking strip on the comics pages, thanks to the lush brushwork and heroic figures drawn by its creator, Alex Raymond. This lavish full-color volume impeccably presents Raymond’s last three-and-a-half years on the strip; he’d enlist in the U.S. Marines in 1944, and rather than return to Flash after his discharge, he’d switch genres completely and create the detective strip Rip Kirby. Even before Raymond’s departure, the war had its effect on Flash. In late 1941, its hero, along with girlfriend Dale Arden and their scientist friend Dr. Zarkoff, left their base of operations on the planet Mongo after vanquishing their archfoe Ming the Merciless and rocketed to earth to aid the Allies. Flash’s story lines may now seem unsophisticated and its characters wooden, but there’s no denying Raymond’s artistic brilliance, which remains impressive to this day. --Gordon Flagg

Don Moore has been interested in Latin America since he discovered the region's shortwave radio stations as a high school student. That lead him to serve as a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras for three years in the early 1980s. After leaving Honduras, he journeyed through South America for six months in 1985 and made several shorter trips in the following decades. During this time he wrote and published numerous articles on Latin American broadcasting and culture. These can be found at his DonMooreDXer website. Since retiring in 2017, he now focuses on making long journeys to less traveled places. He has now written two books and has plans for several more.

    Beautiful book!

    Received mine yesterday. Everything is done to perfection. The paper choice, the restoration, the colors, etc... Like in the two previous volumes of this nice collection by Titan, the strips have been restored, but you simply don't notice it because the colors (as far as I can appreciate) have not been altered. So it looks crisp, and yet it feels old because of the combination of the paper choice and the restoration quality. This volume 3 completes Alex Raymond's run on Flash Gordon, leaving the way for Austin Brigs; which should be the coming volume 4 reprinting the dailies.

    Great job here, worth every penny, buy with confidence!

    This has to be the best alex raymond flash gordon reprint, in terms of quality repros, surpassing even the 1970s nostalgia press hc editions. certainly better than the IDW super size hcs that came out about the same time because the former uses glossy paper quite like the checkers edition that does not bring out the essence of the story and art but this super beautiful deluxe hc edition uses archival matte paper that serves the material best for that classic oomph enjoyment for comics of this classic 20th century genre. And if there is one flash gordon book to keep in your personal library, it is this book's vol 1, doing alex raymond art justice. Followed by vol 2 and then vol.3 here. Nuff said.

    It took some years for myself to complete the Alex Raymond Sunday series,but after buying the Vol.3 - Fall of Ming - I can safely say that illustration-wise this is the best. Of course in the AR period story-lines were secondary and while story-wise Vol.1 will always be the best for me, if I have to rate only based on the art then it's this volume.
    AND REPRODUCTION. TITAN is the best and most reliable among all publishers who are trying to reproduce vintage comic-strips. I hope they will produce more such vintage books. Thank you.
