- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2018Well written. Well plotted. I recommend this instalment of the Murdoch mysteries. It is a bit different from the show but not in a bad way. We have yet to meet Dr Ogden and that's fine with me. Sometimes the show puts too much emphasis on the drama rather than the mystery. I prefer the mystery. Well paced. A good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2016I loved this story and this is interesting since I saw the made for tv movie based on the book before I bought the book. There were differences between the two, but I have to say I liked the book a bit better than the tv movie. Jennings did such a great job of painting a picture of what late nineteenth century Toronto was like that I felt like I was there. Her characters were very real and Murdoch was drawn in a particularly sympathetic way. I really felt for him during the story. I like the way the author alternated between the narration, giving different points of view. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries set in the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2017I'm taking the unusual step of also posting this review with the Murdoch Mysteries TV series.
With regard to the book(s) I found the author's writing to be an attempt at describing Victorian Toronto somewhat forced and deliberate. True, she was accurate in her portrayals but there was a feeling of Nancy Drew writes a Victorian mystery novel, rated R.
I am very impressed that the people who produced the TV show saw the potential in the books and loosely adapted them (style and character wise) to the series now in its, 13th, I believe season. The TV series is an absolute delight!!! The characters are cleverly and carefully drawn, the plots and sly references to the future clever, and the dialog superb... far, far better than the books. Usually it is the other way around, but not in this case. I found myself distraught when Julia leaves Toronto and gets married, thrilled and hopeful when she returns, and delighted when the two lovers are reunited and our hero is able to save her from the noose.... all this romantic drama cleverly woven into wonderful mystery after mystery .I wonder how the cast has fared. Surely after so many years together, virtually their whole careers, there must be some back stories I would love to hear .
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2016As a fan of 'The Artful Detective' and 'Murdoch Mysteries' on television, I thought I'd try the original. This was my second purchase in the series. I was initially disappointed there were only 7 books in this series, but I have no regrets so far. There are significant differences in the main characters as opposed to the television version, so if you were expecting the same type of humor and repartee that the Canadians have done so well with the TV programming, it's not present in the books (so far). That being said, assuming you are able to separate the two, the books are very well done. Character development is a little slow, but again, it's necessary to separate the two.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2018A good read! I like how the author uses expressions and language typical of the time and region depicted in the story. Only down side is that it is on the short side but I enjoyed it a lot, like I did for all other Murdoch stories by Jennings, this was the only one I had not read because for some reason my local library did not have it. I actually give it 4 1/2 stars.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2020I loved Maureen Jennings style of writing. Her expertise of the period setting, the birth of the forensic evidence and criminal investigation techniques are riveting. The story unravels slowly and the characters are developed vividly. If you love historical mysteries and good sleuthing you will find it difficult to put this book down. If you are a lover of Sherlock Holmes you will find this mystery equal to the beloved stories of Conan Doyle.

5.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it
I think this is one of my three favorites of the seven-book series, entirely because it was quite a short read and had an interesting murder mystery.
I agree with another reviewer that these books are NOT in anyway like the TV series - in fact, you could change the characters' names and it could become at totally different series. That aside, these books are still BRILLIANT and I shall continue to read the rest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Under The Dragon's Tail
A thoroughly enjoyable read. sixteen more words and another six teen more words that I am told is required to be written.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Cosy Mystery
Under the Dragon's Tail is disturbing given its graphic descriptions of the social ills of the times but a good "cosy" mystery
in the Murdoch series. As usual the reader is presented with false leads butter conclusion is satisfying.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boredom from start to finish
Maureen Jennings can't seem to decide if she's writing a social primer on nineteenth century Canada or a murder mystery. The social content overtakes the who-done-it and results in a book that doesn't go anywhere. I was most disappointed.
