From the Sangro River on the eastern (Adriatic) coast, through the Appenine Mountains to the Garrigliano River on the western (Tyrrhenian Sea) coast, the Gustav Line was a combination of concrete bunkers set into rugged terrain. There was no way to outflank the Gustav Line, and the most direct route of attack was up Route Six to Rome, via the town of Cassino.

Yet Cassino was fortified, lay behind the Rapido River, and was in turn overlooked by Monte Cassino, crowned by a castle and monastery. As one US general said of this part of Italy, “behind every hill there’s another river, and behind every river, there’s another hill."

The fate of Cassino is in your hands. Will it fall and open the road to Rome to the Allies, or will the Germans continue to hold against the onslaught?

Inside you will find:

The history of the bloody fight for Cassino and the road to Rome.
History and tactics of the Moroccan Goums, the Nisei(Japanese-Americans), the 91st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, the 4th & 8th Indian Division, and the 2nd New Zealand Division.
The option to field a Goum or Nisei Rifle Companies, a Dismount Cavalry Squadron, and Indian or New Zealand rifle companies.
History and tactics of the 1. Fallschirmjager Division, the 44. Reichsgrenadierdivision Hoch und Deutschmeister, and the 90. 'Sardinien' Panzergrenadierdivision.
The option to field a fallschirmjagerkompanie, a Reichsgrenadierkompanie, and a Panzergrendierkompanie.
Introducing Infantry Aces, the brand new escalation campaign system where you will fight for victory and glory with the heroes of Cassino.
Inspirational color photos.

    Flames of War
Having been a wargamer now for over 25 years the table top game Flames of War has taken me by surprise and outclasses all other games in the field. Of course it helps that I am also an armchair general with great interest in military history. The better you know the history the more fun the game is and the better you know the game the more sense military history becomes. For newcomers this book is not a complete game in itself, the game is played with minatures and you will need the core rulebook Flames of War - but if minature wargaming is your thing - then this is the best game I have played.

    Cassino
The focus of this book is the war in Italy in 1944. The Soft Underbelly of the Axis had proven a Tough Old Gut and the terrain ideally suited to defensive combat. The ever active Germans added to this by building some of the most complex defenceworks in World War 2 see German Defences in Italy in World War II (Fortress). Unlike many other Flames of War books and army lists the centre of attention is the infantry war and here we see a nice variety presented. French Colonial Troops in the form of Goums, Japanese fighting under the United States banner, Indians and New Zealanders fighting for the Commonwealth. Even an odd Cavalry Squadron from the US which are mounted in a mechanised manner and armed to the teeth. Each loaded with its own traditions and rules. Against them we have a strong Fortified Grenadier list with almost more goodies than those defending the D-Day beaches, Fallschrimjaeger that just will not break and a motorised blocking force.

If that were not enough we have a complete new scenario game aimed at smaller skirmishes called Infantry Aces where your ace advances and gains skills rather than a prefabricated hero as before.

This is a massive book at a 152 colour pages and the points values are up to date with the new Turning Tide and Earth and Steel so it is made to last. It even has a pin up section at the back where the back cover folds threefold to give you a good map and info for Infantry Aces.

I do reserve 1 star in I think that even though the lists are balanced against each other I still think the overall feel of some of the troops is a little on the side of too good and even if infantry aces is a clever concept I still turn back to the regular games.

    SHORT OVERVIEW

Battlefront has gone all out on this publication and the book is very much up to date and gives focus to otherwise neglected units that have a deserved place in World War 2 history. It will last a good long time and has a place in my collection. Happy Gaming.
