Wood for Sheep: The Unauthorized Settlers Cookbook Paperback – September 6, 2013
Purchase options and add-ons
That’s no reason to give up on dinner and gaming with your friends.
In addition to hextastic homages to everyone’s favorite board game, this cookbook includes over 100 recipes tailored to fit nearly any diet. There are over 80 recipes for vegetarians, more than 60 for people with Celiac disease or gluten intolerance, 50 for people with milk allergies or lactose intolerance, over 30 for vegans and nearly 30 for low carb primal dieters. If that’s not nerdy enough for you, nearly all the recipes are also both kosher and halal.
Get your friends together for a game night. No matter how weird they are, you really can have them all under one roof for one meal while you play one game.
The recipes are split into two sections. The first half of the book is loaded with full scale, highly configurable, edible maps designed for nearly any gaming situation. The second half pays homage to Building Cost cards with recipes chock full of sheep and grain plus creative interpretations of wood, brick, and ore.
Have your friends over for brunch with the home made Breakfast Taco or Waffle Bar maps, impress them on a picnic with the Settlers of the Cold Salad recipes, or even host a Settlers themed Thanksgiving dinner.
If you need more sheep and grain in your life, try the beer marinated Lamb Kabobs, Moroccan Inspired City Lamb, or Panko Breaded Meatballs.
Whether you just want some quick snacks or are throwing a full blown Settlers party, this cookbook has recipes to complete your gaming experience.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2013I had hesitated to get this because I'm no cook. Seriously, I've burned water. Therefore, I prefer food other people make. This book is entertaining to read, the pictures are fascinating to look at, and most of the recipes look easy enough even for me. I have several people in my friend/family circle with dietary restrictions, so I'm always trying to find things I can take to gatherings that will accommodate everyone's needs. This book has everyone covered with lots of interesting, delicious options. Even if you don't play Settlers of Catan, you'll appreciate the simplicity of the layouts and the innovative way of preventing cross-contamination of food allergens, allowing everyone to enjoy what they like, and avoid what they don't.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2013Compound Butter?! Who DOESN'T need 8 pounds of compound butter! Make it in bulk and save up for the next (year's worth of) game(s)! (This is from the Biscuit Bar section)
Great info on the hex dishware, too, and thank you for that!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2014This book was not what I expected - but in a good way. The food in the book is really excellent, but I really appreciated the emphasis on pleasing everyone in the room. These days, people really do have a variety of food limitations, and I love that this book was looking out for people like me who can't eat gluten, and like my friends who can't eat sugar, and other friends who won't eat meat or only eat paleo. And the recipes are really interesting and really go with the theme. I'm even thinking of using pieces of this book for a Catan-themed wedding! Thanks for a really helpful cookbook! :)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2014This book is a fun concept for those of us who like Settlers of Cataan, but there were 15-20 pages missing. I'd recommend saving money and getting the electronic version if that's an option for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2014My husband is a big fan of Settlers of Catan, and I saw this reviewed on NPR, so i knew he had to have it. It was bought as a novelty gift, but there are several recipes inside that actually look really good. And, it's recipes to share with friends who have dietary restrictions, so that's handy info to have. (I haven't kept many recipes for gluten/lactose free friends around up to now.) Glad to have the info, really enjoyed the chuckle.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2014This book looked as if someone bound a bunch of color copies into a book., It will likely never be used for it's intended purpose as a cookbook, but since my BIL loves the game, I thought it'd be funny to get.
