About the authors
H. P. Lovecraft was born in 1890 in Providence, Rhode Island, where he lived most of his life. He wrote many essays and poems early in his career, but gradually focused on the writing of horror stories, after the advent in 1923 of the pulp magazine Weird Tales, to which he contributed most of his fiction. His relatively small corpus of fiction--three short novels and about sixty short stories--has nevertheless exercised a wide influence on subsequent work in the field, and he is regarded as the leading twentieth-century American author of supernatural fiction. H. P. Lovecraft died in Providence in 1937.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2014My passions when it comes to reading.
1: Classic literature which is expertly crafted, spellbinding, wrought of prose in which I can get lost whatever the events depicted therein.
2: Mythos fiction with weird Lovecraftian ideas and influences, even that which is hammered out and roughly edited.
This book is definitely in category two. BUT, the writing and editing is such that it doesn't annoy or interfere with my ability to enjoy these stories. The quality of the writing is more than good enough to get out of the way, and some of the ideas and imagery are wonderful. It's not Hawthorne, Faulkner, Hemingway or... <your favorite classic author> But it definitely doesn't suck, and it's all about, in and around the ideas of Lovecraft's Innsmouth. If you're really a fan of Mythos fiction, and know what I mean by that without thinking about it, then get this thing and read it!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2004I'd like to point out that all of these authors (excepting only HPL himself) are British. Others have pointed this out, but it bears repeating. Most of these stories are set in England, which produces a different interpretation on Innsmouth than American writers. I suspect that the British simply have a different way of viewing things.
Most of the writing was excellent, and the rest was at least innovative. "Deepnet" suggests that as far as Deep Ones taking over humanity, there is more than one way to skin a cat. "Dagon's Bell" by Lumley is one of the most Lovecraftian stories in this collection and "Beyond the Reef", while a little hard to follow, drew in many elements from Lovecraft's Massachusetts.
Some of the writing I found very difficult to appreciate; "Down to the Boots" and "Only the End of the World Again". Maybe the British write in a less concrete way than American authors, but I really had no idea what these stories were about - they seemed more like fragments. Maybe I'm too uncultured to appreciate writing like this, but I felt it brought down the quality of the collection.
There were also a number of stories that I wondered why they used the Innsmouth device. As far as I could tell, they would have been good stories on their own and then had the Innsmouth/Deep Ones jammed in. It makes a poor ad hoc plot device - why not just develop your own ideas? "Homecoming" was the absolute worst offender - it's about going home to Romania after the end of communism only to find nothing has changed. The only connection to Innsmouth was calling the secret police "Deep Ones". I suppose metaphorically it is how the non-collaborators of Innsmouth might feel about their icthyic oppressors, but it's a real stretch to say it belongs.
Well, the stories themselves have been well reviewed below, so I'll leave them alone. It's a decent collection of interesting writing, sometimes loosely connected to the Lovecraftian canon. My only concern is that many stories seem to have had the plot device forcibly inserted.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2018Outstanding stories, beginning with Lovecraft's masterpiece, Shadow Over Innsmouth, expanding and capturing the incredible, early 20th Century world of Cthulhu, and the strange, ancient beings who don't have the best of intentions!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2013One of the classic collections of Lovecraftian stories. British authors doing their own take on shadow haunted Innsmouth. Not every story is perfect, but the collection has something for everyone. Especially if you have gill slits, bulging watery eyes and a fondness for swimming races...
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2015ANOTHER anthology, by modern authors, of tales riffing on one of the keynote horror stories of HPL - in fact, the lead story is The Shadow over Innsmouth' and it is the only A+ rated story, IMHO, in the book.. There are 16 additional Shadow-type tales, of which I ;personally rate 5 as As and 2 as Bs. This makes it an okay-read by MY terms!! While there are only 4 Cs and one D, there are fully three (3) Failures - this is not good for a book wherein selected-for-this-volume stories have been picked; in fact, one of the F stories seems to be based on a bad pun, and another seems far from a HPL-type story (at least to me, and, while I'm not a Literature Maven, I have been reading this genre for 60 years and know what I like therein). Reasonable readers may differ!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2021None were as good as the original story which was to be expected I suppose. I thought the collection would be very repetitive but it somehow managed to avoid that or maybe I was just really in the mood for it.
A few of the stories definitely seemed to be written before the theme and then had the fish people stuff worked in afterward. Homecoming was the worst offender here.
But apart from that most of what's here channels the mood and ideas of Lovecraft's story and I enjoyed it, and if you're up for that you should too.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2013A wonderful compilation of Innsmouth stories. Anyone interested in Lovecraftian stories should own this book. I confess that I have not only the hardback version, but also the softback and the Kindle version. Some things are just that good.

3.0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag
Shadows over Innsmouth is a great concept for an anthology - all the stories present take inspiration or are related to the titular town, and the events that Lovecraft wrote of. As is often the case though, the quality of the work isn't consistent, with some stories definitely outshining the others. Some of the standouts include:
Jack Yeovil's pulpy mystery "The Big Fish", Brian Lumley's "Dagon's Bell" evoking the style of Lovecraft, but without feeling too much like a re-hash, and Neil Gaiman's "Only the End of the World Again" returning the town itself.
A good read, easy to get through and with some novel takes on what lay in store for Innsmouth after the famous events of 1928!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, and it was shipped very quickly
Excellent book, and it was shipped very quickly.
The stories do vary in quality but on the whole capture the feel and oppressive atmosphere of Lovecraft. I put off purchasing any "fan" literature for a long time but I'm glad I purchased this. It's like re-discovering Lovecraft all over again. Well worth your money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classico
Un classico de la literatura de terror y una de las mejores obras de Lovecraft. Fascinante y misterioso a partes iguales.
Si eres familiar con H.P. Lovecraft te encantara, si es tu primera obra del autor, es una buena introduccion al estilo del mismo.
