Fans of Star Trek: The Original Series would probably find this book rather nostalgic. This is a movie poster artbook created by Juan Ortiz for the TV series.

Juan Ortiz started with a movie poster he created for one episode, liked it so much he created a whole bunch of them, one for each episode for the three seasons, including the unaired pilot 'The Cage'. There are 80 episodes in all.

The art style is retro and looks great. The colours look like they are faded on purpose to create that old look from the 60s. For some posters, he even created the folded crumpled paper look, as if the poster had just been taken out from some box.

In terms of design, you can see the influence from Juan Ortiz's background in editorial illustrations from the use of typography, composition, reverse colour fills. There are the strong shapes probably created by a vector graphics software. Compared to photographic movie posters, these Star Trek posters stand on their own for their composition and play of space (pun not intended).

The last few pages contain the index with commentary. The index comes with list of titles with one memorable quote from each, and Juan Ortiz talking about his designs.

This is a huge hardcover measuring almost 14 by 10 inches. The paper's low gloss. All the posters are nicely reproduced, printed to the edge. You'll be able to find the printed posters that sell separately online. But if you want the whole collection in one handy book, this is it.

Recommended to all Star Trek Original Series fans.

I have been a fan of Star Trek my whole life. My dad raised me watching reruns of TOS for as long as I can remember. I first saw some examples of Ortiz's work as posters. I wanted to buy every set, but that was a bit spendy. As soon as I saw this book I threw it in my cart and didn't look back! My first copy was quite warped, but Amazon quickly exchanged it. The colors of the print are very vibrant and the book has a nice cover.

The premise of each piece is "what if each episode of Star Trek (TOS) was a movie? What would the movie poster be?" Looking through the book made me think about some of my favorite episodes. I even went back and watched a few the night I got the book. The styles are varied, but all maintain a retro feel. I am considering purchasing a second copy of the book so I can cut out and frame a few of my favorites. It would still be cheaper than buying a few of the poster sets.

I really enjoyed the art for these classic Trek episodes. (Matter of fact, I loaned it to someone at work and didn't get it back. I gotta resend that 'please return' e-mail!) Printed on heavy paper with Ortiz art, it's clear he loves/loved the show and captured something about each episode that would've made a brilliant movie poster.

This is a wonderful collection of Juan Ortiz' artwork. Ortiz started out to create posters for Star Trek episodes as a lark, but it turned into a full-fledged project, though it neve lost the sense of fun. The artist mixes a variety of influences and both captures the feel of the individual episode and of the art style and period he adapts. These feel like something that would have actually been created in the 60s. The book collects the poster by season, then concludes with Ortiz' notes on their inspiration and creation. This is a great collection for any Classic Trek fan, or lover of 60s-style artwork.

Most of the artwork in this collection is great fun and inventively captures the themes of each TOS episode. Top marks to the book, itself, too: binding and paper stock are very high quality and the volume has a really satisfying heft to it.

A couple addenda to the product description:

While most of the graphics are in the style of movie posters, many are mock magazine covers done in the style of 1950s science fiction / adventure monthlies -- equally fun, in my opinion.

Also, in the back of the book, Mr. Ortiz explains the reasons for the visual choices he's made for every single poster, an extra feature that I enjoyed (I had several "ah-ha!" moments).

The only reason for giving this 4 stars is that a few of the works struck me as generic or disconnected from the source material (for instance, the design for "Space Seed" the which, ironically, is the cover art for the whole book). Overall, however, this is really a lovely book and a fun conversation piece when friends who grew up with ST as I did come over to visit.

pages are stitch bound, and then it looks like they are glued in. I'm not sure.
The quality of assembling in this book is very good and the pages feel like they are very securely bound.
Hard cover is very nice and thick.
Pages are nice; very smooth, thick and well printed.
I'm very tempted to wait for the paperback so I can remove the posters to frame and put on display around the house.
(Yes, I know the posters can be purchased separately, but as a book, it is an astounding value.)

I'm a long-time Star Trek fan and find that conceptially this book is highly original and a lot of fun. It's also presented as though the posters were "found," along with stains and wrinkles on some of the posters. That was a nice touch. While there is some repetition in the design ideas, it's not a big deal -- Mr. Ortiz has captured perfectly both the feeling of original Trek and the graphic design sensibilities of the mid to late 1960s. In fact, I would guess that this work will probably spur others to make similar retro posters of other favorite TV shows. Really an innovative work!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Great
Reviewed in Australia on August 4, 2020
For $18 I'm glad I got it, but it's not great IMO. I mostly like the size and the front cover. I think some of the 'posters' look like they were slapped together relatively quickly. And I don't really get the point of the concept of a movie poster for each TOS episode. They also seem like they'd be hard to cut out to frame. Nor would I bother framing them really, unless it was easy or cheap, which it isn't. I love Trek but this is a 3-star product especially at full price.

Anyone thats a Trekkie fan will get a real kick out of this book with it's many imaginative Poster type scenarios for each and every Star Trek Episode. I really enjoyed looking at each and every poster and seeing how the poster related to the that particular episode. The auther/artist also gives the reason why he drew pictures the way he did at the back. Totally enjoyable book..I bought 2..one to read and one to store away when they this book will command 10x it's original value on day !!!
