About the author

“Warrington is a gorgeous writer, a mistress supreme of syntax, style and pacing; be prepared to fall head-over-heels in love with her writing… Left me enthralled.” – Nancy Kilpatrick
Freda Warrington is the award-winning British author of 23+ fantasy novels (so far) including Elfland (Romantic Times Best Fantasy Novel) and Dracula the Undead (Dracula Society Best Gothic Novel).
Her BFS Shortlisted fantasy series THE AMBER CITADEL (Simon & Schuster) is now available on Kindle for the first time in a five volume series called The Jewelfire Realm: The Amber Citadel, The Ironstone King, The Sapphire Throne, The Ruby Plains and The Obsidian Tower.
“By far the best mainstream fantasy I’ve read this year.” – Waterstone’s Magazine on The Amber Citadel.
Titan Books publish her Blood Wine vampire series - A Taste of Blood Wine and three sequels - "Addictive, thrilling reads that are impossible to put down and they definitely deserve more attention." (Worldhopping.net) "Her prose is simply stunning, sumptuous, graceful and seductive." (Starburst).
NIGHTS OF BLOOD WINE is is her first collection of short stories. Fifteen lush dark tales from Telos Publishing (2017): ten stories connected to her Blood Wine universe, and five more of gothic weirdness.
She is also the author of an alternative history/ fantasy take on the story of King Richard III, The Court of the Midnight King. Sword and sorcery - A Blackbird in Silver and four sequels - was her earliest work, followed by some standalone books, and an epic fantasy trilogy starting with The Amber Citadel. The irreverent and sexy contemporary 'Aetherial Tales' series, beginning with Elfland, adds to her diverse body of work. Many of her older titles are now available on Kindle, not least the spellbinding supernatural duo, Dark Cathedral and Pagan Moon.
Freda was born in Leicester, UK, and worked for some years in graphic design before becoming a full-time writer. She now lives in rural Leicestershire, where she remains very proud of the beautiful ancient landscape of Charnwood: the discovery of the remains of King Richard III beneath a city centre car park: and Leicester City Football Club winning the Premier League in 2016, against all odds. No one tells her they've 'never heard of Leicester' any more!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2014Charlotte feels isolated and lonely, trying to make up for the loss of her mother, and being a scientist alongside her father. She has not been raised to be socially graceful and is very reserved and nervous outside the laboratory .Her closeness to her father has made her more superficial siblings jealous. But, as Charlotte becomes involved with Karl, a vampire who seeks a scientific solution that can be used to kill his ego-maniacal maker, she transforms into someone more confident and willing to defy her family to meet her own needs, and to be with Karl.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2013I enjoyed this book. I never knew where it was going to go. I recommended it to friends of mine.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2018A Taste of Blood Wine has lavish language and well-written characters that leave you thirsty and wanting more. It is a period piece with traditional vampires, along with a touch of the surreal and magic. It isn’t smut, and had an unexpected twist in the middle. It was fun to read as Charlotte turns from being socially awkward to an assertive female lead who doesn’t let men (or anyone) tell her what to do.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2018This is a different view of the vampire legends which is why I enjoyed it. Stay up alnight reading it, at 500 pages is a lot. Especially loved the time period with very little technology. No cellphones. And no jumping into beds like most of the Urban Romance Vampire series that are out there. Looking forward to the next in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2017This was a worthwhile read! It was nice to find a longer e-book. There was a lot to this book. But, the pacing and level of detail were good. It had a good balance of vampiric horror elements without being overly gruesome. I liked the spin they put on the vampire mythos. 5 stars!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2016This was a romance first and foremost. Then it expanded itself to become a vampire romance; yet never lost sight that this was a romantic story at its core. Steadfast and determined, it kept a consistent pace. Quite delightful.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2019The female protagonist is AWFUL. Too whiny for my tastes. Could not finish the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2014Taste Of Blood Wine was a particularly dense read. It covered a lot of ground in four hundred pages however I think part of the plot could have been condensed down to make this book shorter. The novel itself is riddled with cliches but does bring some new and interesting takes on vampire mythology. I wish the narrative had spent more time on that rather than the tired devices of girl meets vampire.
Our main characters are compelling enough but I found some of the familial conflict a bit unrealistic. I kept waiting for the heroine to grow a backbone. In some cases she did but even at the end of the story I was disappointed to see that she didn't carry it as far as she could have. In the final confrontation with her friends and family the heroine allows her family and friends to thrash her emotionally as they have done throughout the novel. Maybe this is the author's way of making readers hate the family, and it works. Unfortunately the heroine continues to angst over the fact that they don't accept her instead of embracing it and walk away a stronger woman.
The conflict between the heroes is also a little overdone. Shy girl meets vampire. Vampire is strangely enthralled by shy girl. Shy girl falls in love with vampire. Vampire tries to force shy girl away by telling her he doesn't love her. Shy girl Andrea for little bit. Vampire recants earlier refusal of love and admits he is in fact in love with her. Shy girl takes vampire back no questions asked. Shy girl begs vampire to become a vampire so they can remain together for all eternity. Like I said, overdone and boring.
The plot to defeat the villain is actually pretty cool and I wish more time had been devoted to it sooner. As I said the new take on the mythology is the real redeeming quality of this book. It adds new spins to feeding, vampire groupings, and even vampire origin. Oh, did I mention that it also gives vampires an actual weakness? It does.
Anywho if you can get through the tied cliches and angst, there might be enough in this book to interest you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bester Vampirroman

5.0 out of 5 stars finally back in print!
I read this when it was in print originally and somehow lost my copy so have been waiting patiently for it to come back into print-so very delighted that it finally is and I purchased it straightaway (and pre-ordered the next one).
A vampire novel unlike others, though reading this now I do wonder if some writers took "inspiration" from Warrington...
A true synopsis would contain too many spoilers so I will keep it brief. Karl, a vampire, becomes involved with a human family through his thirst for knowledge, and the inevitable meeting of his world with theirs has far-reaching consequences, some fatal and some rather unexpected...
Lovely writing style, story moves along nicely, no dead space or over-the-top descriptive passages here. I found myself rooting for Charlotte the main human character and thoroughly enjoyed how she grew as the book progressed.
Just an excellent book all-round, can't wait to read the rest!

I enjoyed this book and am now reading the second in the trilogy. It is an interesting take on the Vampire myth - if it is a myth! In this vein I think the Scott Mariani series is better and would recommend it to readers who like this genre.
