- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2010It's been awhile since I read a 500+ book in one night, but with Martin's 4th installment in the Chronicles of the Necromancer, I couldn't help but keep reading. This book takes on a slightly different structure from the first 3 books in the series, but the change is welcomed, keeping the story timeline more in focus and showing with great care the wonderful character and story development that has made this one of the best fantasy series that I have read.
I just hope Hollywood doesn't get word of how good this series is and ruin it by turning out another screenplay that changes the plot to fit into a 2-hour time slot. The author may disagree, but this series deserves to stay as it is, a beautifully written collection of stories from the Winter Kingdoms.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2017Gail's writing is always entertaining, and her story telling improved with this book. I've read them all three times, and they get better in the repetition. I think this is my favorite book in the series and wish there were more to explore the Winter Kingdoms further (hint, hint Gail, if you're reading)!
I love the intricately connected plot lines and the world building. This story has everything: magic, medievalesque weapons and battles, vampires, shape shifters, and mages. Jonmarc Vahanian's character is definitely my favorite, a poor blacksmith turned mercenary smuggler turned hero. An excellent read!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2012When I bought the first three books for my Kindle, I didn't realize there was a fourth until I finished book 3 last week. And lo, there it was in my recommendations.
I loved the story: Men and women kicking butt and taking names, the dead get a chance to have the final word before going to their just reward, and all the major players get pretty much what they deserve. Martin makes it clear that Happily Ever After isn't always going to be all kittens and rainbows, but she does end the story at a satisfactory point.
The biggest problem I had with this 4th book was the rough file proof: only one paragraph in 3 was free from missing spaces, and all the em-dashes were hyphens. There was a bit of extra space between paragraphs, and the italics coding looked like it was botched in a few places. I don't claim to be the most perfect writer, but I'm the sort of person who gets knocked out of a story when I see a grammatical error. Despite all the bumps in the road, I still maintained my excitement over the journey I took with these characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2013I feel like the Tales of the Necromancer books are amazingly written and would suggest them to any fantasy lover out there. From The Summoner to this, Dark Lady's Chosen, it has been an awesome adventure. The author knows how to captivate you in the story and hold your attention. If you love reading then i suggest you start with The Summoner and keep going.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2014Loved this book in the series! The action was intense. Could not put it down. When the story switched between the stories of the main characters, I was on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what happened to them.
The story was exciting and well written.
The only complaint I have is in regard to the editing and proofreading of the ebook. There were two very frequently-used words in the book that nearly every time they were used, were run into the next word. These were "moru" and "vyrkin." It was annoying to constantly encounter moruwas, morurode, morumentioned, morusaid, monuwent, and more, over and over, ad nauseam. I stopped counting at the fiftieth time, and that was in the first few chapters. Vyrkin run-ons were not quite as frequent, but were no less irritating. Instead of traveling through the story and being completely absorbed in the journey, I had unavoidable pot-holes jarring me out of the plot.

Book Four of the Chronicles of the Necromancer
Treachery and blood magic threaten King Martris Drayke’s hold on the throne he risked everything to win. Civil war looms in Isencroft. In Dark Haven, Lord Jonmarc Vahanian has bargained his soul for vengeance as he leads the vayash moru against a dangerous rogue. Meanwhile, Kiara and Carina are in danger.
The suspense builds until almost the end of the story, as good tales do.
I give this five stars.
Ms. Martin has two more books with these characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top

5.0 out of 5 stars Supurb. Wonderful. Fantastic. Amazing.
I had waited with great anticipation for this fourth book in what I already thought was a brilliant series, and Ms Martin did it again. It is magnificent. Gail Z. Martin is now my favorite author. In all four books the action never slows or becomes predictable. The whole series is a roller-coaster ride from start to finish, and to my great delight it seems that there will be a follow on series in 2011 (it can't come soon enough for me) called "The Fallen King's Cycle". I do hope that it tells us more about my favorite characters. As it is, I can't praise this series highly enough and I just wish there were more stars in the rating so that I could give it more than the five.

I hope there will be more of this kind one day. For the rest look at my recensions for the other books of the series
