The Dragon with the Girl Tattoo Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 43 ratings

Lizbreath Salamander is young and beautiful. Her scales have an iridescent sheen, her wings arch proudly, her breath has a tang of sulfur. And on her back a tattoo of a mythical creature: a girl.

But when Lizbreath is drawn into a dark conspiracy she will have to rely on more than her beauty and her vicious claws the size of sabres ...

A dragon has disappeared, one of a secretive clan. As Lizbreath delves deeper into their history she realises that these dragons will do anything to defend their secrets.

Welcome to the world of The Dragon With The Girl Tattoo. A world of gloomy Nordic dragons leading lives uncannily like our own (despite their size, despite the need for extensive fireproofing of home furnishings), a world of money hoarded, a world of darkness and corruption. A world where people are the fantasy.

Any time someone asks me what I'm reading and I give the title of this book, they correct me, thinking I meant the more widely known "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." This is a spoof and a satire and very enjoyable read. These dragons are so intelligent that one tends to forget while reading that they are dragons, until the author mentions what they do when they meet new dragons. They maneuver around trying to sniff one another's buts, just like certain other animals. These dragons spend their life trying to accumulate more gold to hoard, and any dragon who does not is known to be in need of a legal guardian. The author has managed some commentary on life while the reader laughs over the characters of the dragons.

As a preface, I didn't really care for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - so I was looking for critical reviews to agree with me. What else is the internet for? Somehow I found this parody and, since I enjoy comedic fantasy in the vein of Terry Pratchett, I decided to read the preview. Just a few pages in and I was hooked, so I bought it on Kindle. Adam Roberts has not created high literature here, but people who want to brag about the books they read are not his target audience. The gags are hilarious, and I mean it. I do not normally laugh out loud to a book I'm reading. The author's description of a dragon attempting to sit on an impossibly uncomfortable sofa while maintaining focus on his host (a venerable dragon droning on about family lineages) forced me to pause and laugh more than once.

The characters are written well enough so that you do care, also, and though there are a few moments where the cartoonish fun converts too quickly to a much more dramatic and serious tone, nothing about this read was disagreeable.

In short, it made me laugh, it was fun, and I would read a sequel! There's lots of material for you to continue parodying in this vein, Author. Five stars.

The last third of the book goes a long way toward redeeming the rest, and there are some dead-on critiques (tongue-in-cheek) of plot points from the book series of which this is a parody. The parody ending is arguably a lot BETTER, and the original was almost as difficult to keep slogging through... though ultimately more rewarding.

granted, i had high hopes for this book. but i'm now 95 pages in, and i don't even want to turn to the next page. on literature alone, i'd give this book a 0 stars if i can. this book could have been so much more, but it's just a money sucking scheme preying on people's curiosity and hearts, when in fact its plot and humor is as hackneyed and tasteless as chewing on gym socks from fat camp. or rather, as tasteful. there're pages and pages of intellectually insulting dialogue trying desperately to be cute/silly/funny, or of taupe being a color. hmm, i wonder the taupe part should be considered a spoiler considering it IS a major recurring component of the plot so far.

but i'm going to give this book 2 stars.

because it is hilarious seeing people do double takes at the book title, and it's an excellent conversation piece with girls at bars.

i have seen the movies but have not read the original book. i can see where it follows the book pretty well though. and i was so happy to learn that the detective superintendents name was Smaug. that was a pleasant surprise. it's a really good parody and a good read so far

The idea is really good and well executed. You should have read the original Girl with a Dragon Tattoo in order to fully appreciate it. It is amusing and more for children than for adults.

A really lovely premise that is sadly largely unrealized. While the story itself is fine, the humor feels very much forced. The author tries to elicit laughts from the reader much like a klingon stand up comedian ("Laugh. NOW.")
There's a good number of groaners, and more often than not the writing itself comes across as juvenile, which is never a good thing, not even if the book was intended for a younger audience - which it is not.
