This page details Geek Native’s policy on AI-created content or AI assistance in content creation.
Geek Native will never make money from AI art, including merch. AI art does occasionally appear on the site, but never to replace work that would have been commissioned. Machine learning-enhanced writing tools for grammar and spelling are used often.
This first publication was released in September 2022, again in 2023, and will be reviewed to keep pace with the rapidly evolving technology and issues.
The policy is necessary because a tenet of the site is to be ethical, wise and fair. Geek Native wishes to support the industry but the blog was, historically and until more recently, a loss-making hobby using Patreon, Buy Me a Coffee and store.
We’re now building it into a sustainable business model, which at its heart supports the use of human-created articles and art – and will in no way rely upon AI to produce our content.
However, we wish to fully disclose that Geek Native occasionally uses AI (machine learning) technology for the following.
- Grammarly is used for spellchecking and grammar
- Quillbot is used for spellchecking, grammar and helping to re-write press releases and blurbs
- IMG Larger is used to enhance thumbnails or upscale other images
- Midjourney is used to produce some images
- Notion is used to store notes and produce summaries
Ethical AI/machine learning
Geek Native’s Patreon promises not to spend money raised on maintenance or technology. The use of machine learning / AI technology is considered to be part of this. As a result, Patreon donations are never used to pay for AI software.
Geek Native is committed to, and Patreon is used for raising money to commission articles and illustrations. Despite the rise of AI alternatives, that commitment remains, and the goal is to put money back into the hobby, not technology suppliers.
AI images will illustrate stories or help facilitate marketing (such as in banners).
AI images will not be sold as assets. AI-composed articles will not be used, although AIs are used to assist in the production of blog posts.
Technology partners are expected to hold to high sustainable and ethical best practices.
Where machine learning-produced images are used, their presence will be disclosed with a link to this policy.
